In December of 2015 the World Triathlon Corporation and IRONMAN announced that it has acquired the PPD Beach2Battleship iron distance and half-iron distance triathlon events from the YMCA of Wilmington. The events would be re-branded as IRONMAN North Carolina and IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina and take place on Saturday, October 22, 2016.
The independent Beach2Battleship races had been around for 8 years supported the local Wilmington Family YMCA.
Just two weeks after the events inaugural run, which was affected by the remnants of Hurricane Matthew, comes news that the full iron distance IRONMAN North Carolina race has been discontinued. On the bright side, the event will continue to live-on with the continued running of the IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina triathlon race.
The statement reads:
After careful consideration, IRONMAN North Carolina will not continue for 2017; we will put all efforts into making IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina a top-notch late season race for athletes. We appreciate the efforts and support of the city as well as our volunteers, partners, and everyone else involved in putting on the dual-event this past year and look forward to continued support for the future IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina event that will continue. We appreciate our athletes’ dedication and understand the disappointment that some will have in not being able to race a full-distance event in that location.
